Speaking at NISCORT MediaCollege on World Mental Health Day, on October 10, Auxiliary bishop Deepak Valerian Tauro of Archdiocese of Delhi, urged the students, “to accept the uniqueness of each patient and not generalise.”

Presenting WHO ‘s latest Mental Health Statistics, he said, “today 301 million people struggle with anxiety disorders, and 58 million of them are children and adolescents. More than 280 million people worldwide face depression, including 23 million young people.”

Amala Chacko, Registrar and Assistant Professor at NISCORT noted, “today’s mental health day celebration turned awareness into action, reminding us that seeking help is strength, and that well-being grows when a community learns together.”

“The class on mental health also gave me practical tools and quiet courage for normalizing conversations, reducing stigma, and inspiring us to care for ourselves and each other,” she added.

Several students expressed their views on the one-hour programme, which helped them understand Mental Health in the world as a whole and particularly in India where study reports say prevalence rates for psychiatric disorders vary from 9.5 to 370 per 1000 in India.

Charanjeet a first-year student of Journalism and Mass Communication (BAJMC) at NISCORT I was grateful “to learn that ignoring our mental health can lead to serious problems and that we ought to treat everyone with kindness, because we never truly know what someone might be going through mentally.”

While a third-year student Rudrakash Sawhney observed, “the speaker inspired us to look at mental health as a shared responsibility. His words left a deep and positive impact on all of us.”

Protecting our mental health is a lifelong journey that takes place each day, one step at a time, hence we have to take good care of our mental health, observed Fr Tinto first year student M A JMC.

Ankit, BAJMC, a first-year student noted, “Bishop Tauro urged us to do self-reflection and be aware of our thoughts and emotions so as to promote hope and inner strength when facing life’s challenges.”

I was happy to learn that daily physical exercise, 7 hours of sleep, practice of meditation and spirituality, and examination of consciousness is required to maintain Good Mental health,” commented Fr Sameer Panna, MAAVC, a Second-Year student.

World Mental Health Day is an international day for global health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma. It was first celebrated on October 10, in 1992, at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health.
