Palakkad, Dec 22, 2025: Police in Palakkad have arrested several RSS workers for allegedly attacking a Christmas carol group, including children, during a house-to-house performance in Pudussery–Kasaba, sparking widespread condemnation and concerns over rising communal intolerance during the festive season.
The incident occurred late Sunday evening when the carol group was singing hymns as part of local celebrations. Police said the accused stopped the group, questioned their presence, and objected to the programme. An argument ensued, during which members of the group were allegedly assaulted and musical instruments damaged.
Based on complaints and eyewitness accounts, Kasaba police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges of unlawful restraint, causing hurt, and disturbing public peace. The arrested persons were confirmed to be RSS workers.
Although no serious injuries were reported, parents said the attack traumatised the children. “The children were terrified. This was supposed to be a joyful celebration,” a local resident told Matters India.
The incident has drawn strong criticism from political parties, civil society groups, and church leaders, who described it as an assault on religious freedom and communal harmony.
“Targeting children singing carols is unacceptable. Strict action must follow to protect minorities during religious observances,” said a church representative.
Police officials assured that law and order has been restored in the area and appealed for calm. The accused are expected to be produced before a magistrate, with authorities indicating that further involvement will not be spared.
The Palakkad attack comes amid growing unease over assaults on Christmas-related events in different parts of the country. Kerala, long regarded as a state with a strong tradition of inter-religious coexistence, now faces questions about safeguarding its pluralist ethos.
