New Delhi, Dec 30, 2025: For 30-year-old Smiley, life has been a challenging journey after his maid dropped him when he was six months old. The accident continues to challenge him physically and emotionally.
However, his determination and enthusiasm to live a normal life has helped him become a warrior of indomitable strength. He spoke to Matters India in New Delhi about his journey from a disabled child to an employed young man.
MI: Smiley, it is very touching to hear you say. “The Lord broke me first, and then he made me a masterpiece.” What makes you say so?
Smiley: (Smiling) What I am today is a miracle of God. I was severely wounded when the maid dropped me. My one side was affected. My life had not been easy. It was a big struggle for me. If you have Jesus as your master in your life, you have nothing to worry. I never felt abandoned. Is it not a miracle that God has not only kept me alive but active despite my disabilities?
The maid must have been apologetic, wasn’t she?
(Thoughtfully) She was least apologetic, I am told. My mother was in utter distress and I received a wound on my head that paralyzed my right side.
How did your mother take care of you?
She had a hard time. My body had a swelling and I was in severe pain. The doctors informed my mother that the wound was near to the brain. The surgery would affect my nerves. I underwent several surgeries over the years, the first when I was seven. I am not fully well yet. My right side still does not function well. I cannot do hard work. I have to use my left hand to lift things. God wanted me on this earth. So, he saved me.
Did you attend a regular school?
Although I needed help to move around, I had a great desire to attend school. My mother stood by me. She carried me to several schools to get admission but all suggested that I be admitted to a special school because of my physical disability. She wanted to educate me in a school for normal children at any cost.
Really? Did she succeed?
(With a smile) Yes. My mother’s tears were rewarded. The school that once rejected me, called us and I could sit with normal children in the class. It gave me tremendous joy and self-esteem. Ever since I have not looked back. I completed school and a bachelor degree and now work online for a British Railway company. Yes, The Lord broke me first, and then made me a masterpiece. Is it not true?
Have you ever asked you why this happened to you? Has your situation frustrated you, any time?
Yes, I do get frustrated often. There is a reason. Because whatever work I get I give it my best. Hundred percent. I do one work at a time, but I invest all my knowledge, talent and energy in it. At the end when I am misunderstood, I get frustrated. I then go to my room and think about it. I cry or remain silent. Speaking to someone helps me enter that person. So, I speak to Mother Mary. I tell her “Be a mother to me.” It is better to speak to her than to talk to a human. She is the Mother of God.
What about your friends? Do you have some good friends who help you?
I have a few selected friends. I believe in quality not in quantity. I like someone who understands me, who welcomes me in spite of my physical disability and helps me. In fact, I move around with the help of my friends. I cannot walk by myself. My friends are my legs. I do not use a walking stick. But my best friend is Jesus, He never leaves me. He is with me in joys and difficulties. Jesus has blessed me with things which I never asked for. Because he knows what I want.
How did you find a job?
After my graduation, and a course in Travel and Tourism, I wanted to work. People thought I would not get a job. I told them trying for a job is my part. Giving a job is the Lord’s part. My cousin took me for an interview for a British company. I prayed, ‘Lord if it is your will that I should work, please help me.” After the interview the manager spoke to me. He asked me at last, “Do you believe in Jesus.” I told him “Yes”. I never thought that I would get the job. After a few minutes the manager told me that I was selected. I work from home.
Why don’t you use a support system to move around?
I moved around with the help of others when I grew up. I also used a wheelchair for a long time. When God entered my life, I began to experience his support. God has not left me alone ever since.
Could you explain your God experience?
After my last surgery I was in bed with great pain. I could not get up. It was in December 2011. I could hear the celebration, carol singing all around me as I lay in bed. I told my mother that I wanted to celebrate Christmas. She looked helpless.
One day, in that helplessness I stood up suddenly. Pain was gone. It was as if someone had held my hand and helped stand up. It was as if Jesus said, “Smiley, stand up.” I stood up without support. I walked. After that I neve use any physical support. I went to church and celebrated Christmas (smiles).
What is your message for those who get upset with little disappointments?
Do your best. Never give up. Leave the rest to God. He will do the rest. Leave all your worries and anxieties to God. Once you allow God to enter your life, He will never leave you. If you trust Jesus he will arrange things for you.
What about your family?
My father is a businessman and mother is a housewife. I am the third and youngest child of my parents. I have a brother and a sister. My brother helps my father in the business. Sister is married.
