Siliguri, January 31, 2026: A new academic title, An Introduction to Buddhism, was formally released during the inaugural ceremony of Sangam – Ethnic Day 2026 at Salesian College (Autonomous), Siliguri, 31 January. The book was launched by Principal Fr (Dr) Babu Joseph in the presence of its author, Fr (Dr) Tomy Augustine, Rector of the college, and two Buddhist nuns who assisted with editorial review.

The book explores the origins, evolution, and philosophical depth of Buddhism, with particular attention to its adaptive traditions and socio-political impact across centuries.

Speaking at the event, Fr Tomy Augustine noted, “Buddhism is not a static system of beliefs—it is a living tradition that continues to shape thought and society. This book is a humble attempt to make its richness accessible to students and seekers alike.”

The presence of the Buddhist nuns added symbolic depth to the occasion, reflecting the spirit of interfaith dialogue and cultural pluralism that Ethnic Day celebrates.

The 363‑page volume, published by Salesian College Publications and priced at ₹500, is organized into 13 chapters, complemented by an eight‑page selected bibliography and a ten‑page index.

This volume is part of an eight-part series on the history of religions, curated by distinguished professors from leading Institutes of Philosophy and Seminaries across India.

The release was part of a larger day-long celebration of India’s ethnic diversity, featuring folk performances, traditional cuisine, cultural performances and multi-ethnic theme based fashion show.
