New Delhi, April 15, 2026: SIGNIS India, the Indian chapter of the World Catholic Association for Social Communication, issued a strong statement condemning recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump directed at Pope Leo XIV.

The organization described the comments as “disparaging” and said they “profoundly wound the sentiments of Catholics worldwide, who revere the Holy Father as the successor of St. Peter and the visible head of the Church.”

According to the statement, “An affront to the pope is, in essence, a disregard for the faith and dignity of millions of believers across the globe.”

Responsible communication urged

While acknowledging the importance of free expression, SIGNIS India emphasized that “personal attacks on religious leaders have no place in responsible communication.”

The group warned that such rhetoric “undermines mutual respect, weakens interreligious harmony, and erodes the moral fabric of public discourse.”

As communicators, members said they are “committed to truth, dignity, and peace” and called on leaders, media professionals, and influencers to “exercise responsibility, uphold civility, and refrain from language that demeans the religious convictions of others.”

Loyalty to the Holy Father

The statement reaffirmed the group’s “filial loyalty and communion with the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV,” expressing hope that his ministry “rooted in peace, justice, and compassion for the poor—continues to inspire humanity.”

SIGNIS India underscored its mission to amplify voices of respect and unity, noting that the pope’s leadership remains a source of inspiration for Catholics and non‑Catholics alike.

Call for prayer, not anger

The organization encouraged the faithful to respond to the situation with prayer rather than outrage. “We also encourage the faithful to respond to such situations not with anger, but with prayer—for our Holy Father and for all those entrusted with leadership, that they may be guided by wisdom, truth, and respect,” the statement said.

Broader implications

The controversy highlights ongoing tensions between political rhetoric and religious sensitivity. SIGNIS India’s intervention reflects concern that public discourse is increasingly vulnerable to divisive language.

By urging restraint and respect, the group positioned itself as a guardian of communication ethics within the Church and society. Its appeal to leaders and media professionals underscores the responsibility of those with influence to foster dialogue rather than discord.

SIGNIS India’s statement serves as both condemnation and reminder: condemnation of remarks seen as offensive to Catholic faith, and reminder of the need for civility in public life.

The group’s closing words -— “truth, dignity, and peace”—summarize its vision for communication in a pluralistic world.
