New Delhi, May 6, 2026: The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India congratulated the people of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry for the “successful and peaceful conclusion of their assembly elections” and extended warm wishes to victorious parties and candidates.

In a statement, the bishops appealed to the new governments to “steadfastly respect and uphold the Constitution of India” and to govern with transparency. They emphasized that “true Nation Development is achieved only when the fruits of progress reach the most vulnerable sections of our society.”

The conference urged leaders to prioritize policies for “the poor, the marginalized, the less advantaged, and minority communities.” It also reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to nation-building through its educational, medical and social welfare institutions.

Cardinal Poola Anthony, president of the CBCI, said, “The true measure of a vibrant democracy lies not just in the successful conduct of elections, but in the steadfast commitment of elected leaders to serve the most vulnerable.”

He called on governments to “work hand-in-hand with all institutions to build a more just, inclusive, and equitable India.”

The bishops concluded with a prayer that elected representatives be guided by “wisdom, justice, and deep compassion” in their public service.
