Panaji, May 26, 2026: The church bells of Goa now ring with sorrow following the untimely death of Father Bolmax Pereira, parish priest of St. Francis Xavier Church, Chicalim, known for his fight for people, culture and the environment.
The 50-year-old priest collapsed at Vasco railway station while preparing to travel with parishioners for a picnic.
Despite initial revival and treatment at Goa Medical College and Hospital, he suffered another cardiac arrest and passed away early May 26 morning.
“It is indeed shocking and deeply saddening to hear about the untimely demise of Father Bolmax Pereira,” said Father Anthony Rodrigues of Rachol.
A priest beyond the altar
For thousands across Goa, Father Bolmax was more than a parish priest. He was a shepherd who walked beside his people, defended the voiceless, and fought tirelessly for Goa’s fragile environment.
A Ph.D. scholar and Assistant Professor of Botany at St. Joseph Vaz College, he researched the sustainable management of wetlands and mentored youth through initiatives like the Chicalim Youth Farmers Club and the Chicalim Bio Crusaders.
He also played a pivotal role in the #SaveMollem campaign, opposing projects that threatened Goa’s forests and ecology.
Honored for his service
Father Bolmax’s dedication earned him multiple recognitions, including the Goa State Biodiversity Board Appreciation Award, the Thomas Stephens Konkani Kendra Puraskar, and the Eco Achievers of India Award by the CBCI Ecology Commission.
Parishioners described him as “a people’s priest” and “a protector of Goa.” His simplicity, kindness, and courage inspired an entire generation.
Voices of grief
Tributes poured in from clergy, laity, and community leaders.
“He was a talented and courageous priest who stood firmly for justice and truth. His deep love for Christ and the mission of the Church inspired many hearts,” Father Mathew Rodrigues of Velim said.
Father Jason Keith Vaz reflected, “Father Bolmax had much in common with St. Philip Neri, sharing not just a heart condition, but also a heart bursting with love for the people of God.”
Father Nazareth Fernandes, Superior General of Society of the Missionaries of St. Francis Xavier, added, “May the Lord bless him with eternal reward for the beautiful life he lived as a priest and exemplified in his service to Goa and the Nation.”
Lay voices echoed the same grief. Debra D’costa Bir wrote, “A sad day for us Goans, as we have lost a warrior who loved nature and stood tall for it.” Alvarinho added, “His courage, dedication and unwavering love for Goa will always be remembered.”
Farewell that became prophetic
On May 19, 2026, during what was intended as a farewell sermon at St. Francis Xavier Church, Chicalim, Father Bolmax spoke words that now carry haunting poignancy: “Death is certain, but its timing remains known only to God.”
Neither he nor those gathered imagined these reflections would become one of his final public messages.
His farewell reminded the faithful of life’s fragility and the importance of living each day with faith, purpose, and love.
Legacy that lives on
Father Bolmax’s mission was rooted in courage and service. He stood against corruption, exploitation, and environmental destruction, often unsettling vested interests.
As Father Anthony Rodrigues noted, “His sudden death has left many hearts wounded and has raised several unanswered questions in the minds of people. Yet, history and faith constantly remind us that injustice and corruption can never have the final word.”
His funeral mass will be celebrated on May 28, 2026, at 3:30 p.m. at Holy Cross Church, Quepem.
Father Barry Cardozo, Director of the Diocesan Centre for Social Communications Media, summed up the collective grief:
“Father Bolmax … a beloved priest, dedicated Professor of Botany, passionate PhD scholar, and an impactful community leader of Goa…was a guiding light who touched countless lives through his spiritual leadership, care for the environment, and deep affection for his parishioners, students, youth and the State of Goa.”
