New Delhi, June 11, 2026: he Conference of Catholic Bishops of India on Wednesday released the Indian edition of Magnifica Humanitas, Pope Leo XIV’s landmark encyclical on artificial intelligence.
The ceremony at the Apostolic Nunciature in New Delhi marked the first official presentation of the document in India. Msgr. Andrea Francia, Chargé d’affaires a.i. of the Nunciature, handed the inaugural copy to Father Stephen Alathara, deputy secretary general of the bishops’ conference.
Promulgated May 25, the encyclical reflects on the ethical and social implications of emerging technologies. It highlights issues of human dignity, labor, solidarity, and the common good, urging a human-centered approach to innovation. “Magnifica Humanitas is a landmark encyclical that addresses the opportunities and challenges presented by the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence,” the bishops’ press release stated.
The letter builds on the Church’s social teaching tradition, referencing Rerum Novarum, Centesimus Annus and Laudato Si’. Pope Leo XIV calls for technology to serve the integral development of every person and to promote a just and compassionate society.
The Indian edition aims to make the Holy Father’s teaching accessible to the faithful, educators, policymakers, and those shaping the future of technology. Copies are available through the bishops’ conference publications office.
Father Alathara said the release underscores the Church’s commitment to guiding ethical reflection on technology in India’s rapidly changing society.
