Vatican City, June 14, 2026: Pope Leo XIV has called on priests to embody holiness through “upright, simple and pure hearts” that remain “contemplative in the midst of action, merciful and faithful in times of trial, and joyful in the gift of himself.”

He said the world “greatly needs pastors who offer more than simply words or programs; it needs the living witness of a reconciled heart that exudes the sweet fragrance of Christ’s holiness.”

Marking the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the pope in his June 12 message to Priests on the Occasion of the Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests, reminded them that holiness is not “one option among many nor an abstract ideal,” but the very identity of those who wish to share in the risen life.

“Be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy,” he quoted from Scripture, adding that God invites priests “to share in his own holiness” by being “fashioned after his own Heart.”

He acknowledged the paradox of priestly life: “We are called to share in God’s own holiness, but we carry this treasure in earthen vessels. We are limited and imperfect, often weak and weary, and at times wounded.” Yet, he said, priests find peace “in the open side of the Lord Jesus.”

Union with Christ’s Heart

Pope Leo stressed that union with Christ’s Heart is not reserved for a select few but is “a sacramental, Eucharistic journey that unfolds each day of our lives.” He urged priests to renew grace through “daily celebration of the Eucharist, prayer, meditation on the word of God and humble service.”

“The holiness that we have sought in vain through isolated efforts will reveal itself for what it is: a response to the grace that precedes, sustains and transforms us,” he said. Even weariness, joys, failures, or “time or love that apparently seems wasted” become places where God reveals his infinite love.

He described the priest with a pure heart as “contemplative in the midst of action, merciful and faithful in times of trial, and joyful in the gift of himself.”

Such a life, he added, is “a credible sign of unity, peace and mercy.” In an age marked by division and fear, priests must be “builders of peace and witnesses of the tenderness of the Good Shepherd who knows how to gather the scattered and heal the wounded.”

“Our zeal is not restlessness,” he said, “but the overflowing of a love that is ecstasy, openness, gift and encounter.”

Heart of Christ is the heart of the saints

The pope emphasized that holiness is not distant perfection but “a love that gives itself even to the point of being wounded and so can become a source of mercy and life.”

The Sacred Heart of Jesus, he said, is “an exemplary image of the surpassing love of God,” a love “capable of being vulnerable and of transforming sorrow into grace and suffering into hope.”

He described priestly holiness as “humble and courageous nearness, in being all things to all people, and in keeping the gate of the sheepfold open so that many can enter and find pasture and rest.”

Priests, he said, are called to closeness, compassion, and listening, shaping “patient and tender hearts.”

“Through the union of our imperfect hearts with Jesus’ pierced Heart, our journey toward holiness is fulfilled. It is no longer we who live, but Christ who lives in us,” he said.

Holiness, he added, “cannot be lived in isolation. Cherish your priestly fraternity: seek one another, listen to one another and support one another.”

Practice charity

Quoting Saint Augustine, the Augustinian pope warned against isolation: “How shall we avoid finding ourselves in darkness? By loving our brothers. What is the proof that we love our brothers? This: that we do not fracture unity and that we practice charity.”

He urged priests to renew daily their “Here I am” before Christ’s pierced Heart. “Give yourselves entirely to him, so that you may love his people with the same love with which he loves them,” he said.

The pope recalled the words of the Cure of Ars: “The priesthood is the love of the heart of Jesus.” He assured priests that “if we surrender and offer ourselves completely, nothing of us will be lost.”

Concluding his message, Pope Leo entrusted priests to the Virgin Mary, “Mother of Priests,” asking that she teach them “to keep alive and make the Heart of Christ, Savior of the world, beat within us.”
