PONDICHERRY, July 30, 2026: Rectors of Latin Church basilicas from across India have gathered in Pondicherry for the Annual General Body Meeting of the Association of Basilica Rectors of India (ABRI), a four-day event focused on prayer, pastoral planning and collaboration.
The meeting, being held from July 27 to July 30, has brought together 26 rectors representing the 30 Latin Church basilicas in the country. Participants are engaging in discussions, reflection and fellowship aimed at strengthening the shared mission of India’s historic centers of faith and pilgrimage.
The gathering opened with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, presided over by Archbishop Francis Kalist of Pondicherry and Cuddalore. In his homily, he reflected on the life and witness of St. Alphonsa and emphasized the central role of personal faith in pastoral ministry.
“Experiencing Jesus and sharing Jesus” must remain at the heart of every basilica’s ministry, Archbishop Kalist said, urging rectors to deepen their personal encounter with Christ and guide others toward the same experience.
Welcoming the delegates, Father S. Pitchaimuthu, rector of the Sacred Heart Basilica in Pondicherry and president of ABRI, expressed happiness at hosting the national gathering. He highlighted the importance of strengthening fraternity and collaboration among basilica rectors.
Salesian Father John Chalil, rector of the Basilica of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary in Bandel, Kolkata, and secretary of the association, outlined the program and objectives of the meeting.
A key item on the agenda is the discussion and finalization of draft statutes for ABRI. The proposed statutes will be submitted to the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India Executive Committee for consideration at its September 2026 meeting in Bangalore.
ABRI was established by the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India in 2025 to promote fellowship, collaboration, mutual support and the sharing of pastoral experiences among basilica rectors nationwide.
