New Delhi, July 18, 2026: Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop Albert Hemrom, of Dibrugarh, as the Coadjutor Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Guwahati, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) announced July 16.
Born February 27, 1969, in Konapathar Village, Assam, Bishop Hemrom pursued priestly formation at St. Joseph’s Minor Seminary, Dibrugarh, and theological studies at Oriens Theological College, Shillong. He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Dibrugarh on April 25, 1999.
Following ordination, Hemrom served in pastoral and academic roles, including Assistant Parish Priest at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Rajabari, and Prefect of Studies at St. Joseph’s Minor Seminary.
He later became Parish Priest of St. Francis of Assisi Church before completing doctoral studies in Canon Law.
His academic credentials include a Licentiate in Canon Law from St. Peter’s Pontifical Institute, Bengaluru, and a Doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Lateran University, Rome.
He subsequently held key diocesan responsibilities such as Judicial Vicar, Rector, and Lecturer in Canon Law at Oriens Theological College.
Pope Francis appointed him Coadjutor Bishop of Dibrugarh in December 2018. He was ordained Bishop in February 2019 and succeeded as diocesan bishop in February 2021.
As Coadjutor Archbishop, Bishop Hemrom will assist and eventually succeed the current 74-year-old Archbishop John Moolachira of Guwahati, continuing his pastoral mission in Northeast India.
