Shillong, September 12, 2026: Catholic bishops from Northeast India issued a strong appeal for peace and reconciliation amid ongoing violence in Manipur, expressing sorrow over the loss of lives, displacement of families and destruction of places of worship.
In a press statement released following the annual meeting of the North East India Regional Bishops’ Council (NEIRBC) in Shillong September 7 to 9, the bishops said they were deeply anguished by the continuing suffering in the conflict-hit state.
They noted that many people have lost their lives, thousands have been displaced and communities continue to endure fear and uncertainty.
The bishops condemned violence “in any form and by any individual or group,” stressing that no grievance can be legitimately resolved through violence, arson or the spread of hatred. They warned that violence only deepens wounds and leaves lasting consequences for future generations.
The church leaders called on the people of Manipur to refrain from inflammatory speeches, rumours and retaliatory actions.
They also appealed to state and central government authorities to pursue sincere dialogue, justice and cooperation as pathways toward lasting peace.
The statement urged the protection of all citizens, impartial humanitarian assistance and an inclusive peace process that respects the dignity and rights of every individual.
Emphasizing Christian teachings on forgiveness and reconciliation, the bishops encouraged people of all faiths and backgrounds to work together to restore harmony.
They also asked church institutions to support victims of violence without discrimination and to promote peace and goodwill in affected communities.
Manipur has faced ethnic violence involving Meithei and Kuki-Zo communities since May 3, 2023 and remains trapped in an ethnic quagmire where violence and hostility persist despite peace efforts.
