Miscreants vandalize cathedral church in Assam

By Matters India Reporter

Guwahati: Unidentified miscreants have vandalized tabernacle and Sacred Hosts kept inside the Catholic cathedral church in Bongaigaon in Assam, northeastern India.

The attack took place in the night of June 20, according to a press release from the Assam Christian Forum.

The church authorities have filed a first information report.

The police visited the site on June 21 and began a probe into the incident.

Bongaigaon diocesan authorities have appealed the faithful remain calm. The diocese has decided to hold a prayer vigil for peace and harmony, Allen Brooks, spokesperson of the Assam Christian Forum, told Matters India. He termed the incident as shocking.

The incident has shocked and pained Christians in the state. They have appealed to the state chief minister to look into the matter immediately and take appropriate action.

The Christians have also urged the chief minister, who is also the state home minister, to take steps to maintain peace and harmony among all communities.

Bongaigaon is some 190 km northwest of Guwahati, Assam’s commercial capital.

It is sad that it is happening too often. Why is the government (is only the centre to be blamed or the state too) forcing some to live in utter helplessness by promoting such incidents and then sitting and watching sadistically?

Its shocking to hear about this irresponsible act. Government has to take appropriate action sooner than later.

Agree. Christians are said to be alien as alledgedly said once by the future BJP president of India

There seems to be tacit approval for miscreant elements in the various dals and senas to attack minorities, especially Muslims, Dalits and Christians… and go unpunished. The fact is – ruling party at the centre and the state seem to favour them and will not do anything to restrain their cadres either. This is the hard reality which will force minority youth to take to violence and retaliation.

The central Government and State Government rule of RSS give all the motivations for the street goons to attack in the Churches. Modi/Amith Shaw will not speak a word against the attacks of the Churches.
