Guwahati: Unidentified miscreants have vandalized tabernacle and Sacred Hosts kept inside the Catholic cathedral church in Bongaigaon in Assam, northeastern India.

The attack took place in the night of June 20, according to a press release from the Assam Christian Forum.

The church authorities have filed a first information report.

The police visited the site on June 21 and began a probe into the incident.

Bongaigaon diocesan authorities have appealed the faithful remain calm. The diocese has decided to hold a prayer vigil for peace and harmony, Allen Brooks, spokesperson of the Assam Christian Forum, told Matters India. He termed the incident as shocking.

The incident has shocked and pained Christians in the state. They have appealed to the state chief minister to look into the matter immediately and take appropriate action.

The Christians have also urged the chief minister, who is also the state home minister, to take steps to maintain peace and harmony among all communities.

Bongaigaon is some 190 km northwest of Guwahati, Assam’s commercial capital.
