Guwahati: A Bangladeshi national, suspected to be a cattle smuggler, was killed in lightning near the International Boundary, at Barmanpara, Dhubri on the intervening night of May 7 and 8.
India’s Border Security Force troops at Barmanpara discovered the body while returning to the post after night border domination duty. They claimed the body was found some 500 meters inside the Indian territory.
The dead was later identified as Rahmat Ali, 30, son of late Jaser Ali and resident of Kalaichar Pokhura village in Kurigram district of Bangladesh.
Two dead cattle heads, with halters tied to Rahmat’s hand, were found lying by his side. The injuries on them indicated that they were struck by lightning. The area had been experiencing lightning and thunder for some days.
On learning about the incident, representatives of Bangladesh’s Border Guards requested the BSF to hand over the body.
Later a Company Commander level Flag Meeting was held where BSF Commander while protesting the illegal entry of Bangladeshis into the Indian territory promised to handover the body after completion of autopsy and other legal formalities.
The Bangladesh side said the lightning victim was a recognized criminal and promised to prevent their people from illegally crossing the International Border.
The body was taken away for autopsy and completion of other legal formalities.
