Tezpur — Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU), becomes the first Catholic University and first Don Bosco Institution to take part in the National University Youth Festival organized by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) with support from the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, Govt of India.
National Inter-University Youth Festival was started in 1954 under the aegis of then Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru.
A 24-member ADBU contingent led by Assistant professors Mr Kaushik Bhuyan and Miss Yurthingla P. is participating at the 31st Inter University Youth Festival called “Brahmaputra Mahotsava 2016” for eastern India.
Hosted at Tezpur University in Upper Assam from 3rd to 7th January with a five-day programme the event was inaugurated by Prof Biren Dutta eminent educationist and former president of the Assam Sahitya Sabha and also a participant at the first national youth festival held in 1954.
Thirty two Eastern India University teams from far away Varanasi to distant Manipur are participating.
Secretary General of AIU and the Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Himachal Pradesh Dr Furqan Qamar declared the event open.
Also present at the inaugural function, 3rd January were eminent educationists, bureaucrats and parliamentarians.
Noted youth and culture activist, and AIU Joint Secretary Mr Sampson David in-charge of Inter-University Youth Festivals (UNIFESTS) since 1985 addressed and motivated the participants.
From 4th January, hundreds of students are competing in 27 events such as one-act play, presentation of western group songs, western vocal (solo), classical instruments (NP), poster making contest, skit, folk tribal dance, debate and quiz competition, cartooning, clay modeling and installation, skit, classical dance and vocal, mime, photography, and rangoli.
On January 6, mime, light vocal, folk orchestra, mimicry will be the major attraction of the day.
The curtain of the mega event will fall on January 7 at 10 Am with a valedictory programme.
