Giridih: Ten people were killed on Sunday and 15 others injured when a heavy vehicle went out of control and ran into an idol immersion procession in the Jharkhand’s Giridih district, a senior district administration official said.
The incident occurred on the Giridih-Bagodar Grand Trunk road when the driver of a trailer-truck lost control and ran into the group of going to immerse the idol of Goddess Saraswati, Giridih Deputy Commissioner Uma Shankar Singh said.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Deepak Kumar has rushed the spot, he added.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das expressed grief over the incident and asked the local lawmaker and district administration to support the relief work, NDTV reported.
Mr Das announced a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh for each of the family that lost a member in the accident, an official said.
The heavy vehicle ploughed into the procession, mostly killing teenagers and children, the police said.
