Durg: This may sound strange but, around 35% pregnant women in different parts of rural as well as urban parts of the Chhattisgarh prefer delivery at home though the Central and State Governments have launched a plethora of health schemes for their benefit.

This starling fact came to light during reports of Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 27 districts of the State and found these shocking facts.

According to the report of ministry, out of 52,615 women, wherein 65% preferred institutional deliveries including 55% in government and 10% in private hospitals respectively. However, to the surprise of officials, 35% preferred deliveries at home.

As part of the National Safe Motherhood Week, health officials launched a series of awareness camps among pregnant women in rural parts of the district to promote institutional deliveries.

To the surprise along with rural areas, home deliveries still practice in many urban pockets and owing to the rumours as well as orthodox nature, families prefer to perform deliveries at home by trained and also untrained midwives. Senior gynaecologist Dr C Tiwari said, “Several programmes are being carried out with the help of technical support unit at rural areas but home deliveries happen at large number. The maternal mortality rate (MMR) in the state has declined to a major extent and stands at 250 deaths among one lakh.
