Tripoli: The Indian Embassy in Tripoli, Libya’s capital, has secured the release of an IT engineer from Kerala.
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday confirmed Regi Joseph’s release in a series of tweets. The youth from Kooranchund in Kozhikode district was abducted in Libya on March 31.
“Indian Embassy in Libya has secured the release of Regi Joseph – an Indian national from Kerala. He was abducted in March this year,” Swaraj tweeted.
In another tweet, she expressed her gratitude to India’s Ambassador to Libya Azar A H Khan for his efforts in securing Regi’s release.
“This has been possible with the efforts of Mr Azar A H. Khan our Ambassador in Libya,” she said in another tweet.
Regi was held by the armed force representing one of the Tripoli-based self-declared governments of Libya, The Hindu reported.
This government had not accepted the U.N.-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) since it came into effect in April.
The 43-year-old engineer was an employee of Al Diwan Company, entrusted with implementing the national citizen database project for the Civil Registry Authority, which rival factions wanted access to.
