Guwahati: The pang of a broken heart seems to be more severe than that of poverty and unemployment as the number of people who commit suicide over failed love affairs is larger than those who kill themselves due to the other two reasons according to statistics provided by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

At least 10 people end their lives every day in the country after being let down by their lovers, whereas poverty and unemployment- considered big drivers of suicide-forces eight and six Indians respectively to commit the crime, the data released by NCRB for the year 2012 said.

According to the state wise analysis, in 2012 Assam leads the league of suicides with 494 cases followed by Tamil Nadu (488)and Madhya Pradesh(355).

It may be mentioned that, statistics reveal that the national average of suicide rate is 10.9 while Assam has the rate of 9.7 per cent. Out of the total cases registered in India due to various, suicides due to love affairs constitute 2.9 per cent of it.

According to the latest report by NCRB, 3711 suicide cases have been registered in the year 2012 which is a pointer to the fact that passion crimes and death are on a steady rise.

The psychological aspect related to suicide varies from person to person. Depression leads to certain hormonal changes in the body. Such biological changes in the body results in anxiety, sadness and unwillingness to live, opines Sreemoyee Raina, a city based psychologist. “Each one of us has a different personality.

The mental strength and social system varies. Not all failed affairs lead to suicide. But the major aspects are depression, loss of social and self respect and the social taboo associated with it. “We are brought up in a culture where it is very difficult to cope with situations of a break up. It’s hard to accept the absence of physical intimacy, togetherness and comfort when it is not there anymore. It leads to depression and ultimately suicide.” adds Raina.

Echoing her is Dr. Tanushree Deb Gupta of Silchar Medical College, Depression definitely leads to hormonal imbalance.Melatonin is the hormone that is often responsible for excessive depression that often results in unwillingness to live. It makes the mind pessimistic and develops self low esteem.”

“It is very important for the parents to be very close to their children. The support from the society and parents bears positive results. This curbs the tendency within a person to commit suicide. Amongst most of the cases registered of suicide, we find the bonding between the deceased and the family in these matters was not so strong”, a senior police official said.
