Kochi: Kerala, the state with the highest sex ratio in the country has decided to set up a women’s battalion in its Police force with its headquarters either in Thiruvananthapuram  or Kannur. This decision, by the state cabinet on Wednesday is part of increasing the strength of women in police to 15 per cent in phases.

A total of 451 positions including one commandant, 20 women havaladars, 380 women Civil police officers, five drivers, one armour Sub Inspector,  20 camp followers and 10 technicians will be created for this.

The sex ratio in Kerala is 1084 females to 1000 males compared to 940 females per 1000 of males in India.As per details from the 2011 Census, Kerala has a population of 3.34 Crores, of which male and female are 16,027,412 and 17,378,649 respectively.

In 2001, total population was 31,841,374 in which males were 15,468,614 while females were 16,372,760.
