Kochi: The five- member committee of bishops led by Archbishop Mathew Moolakkattu constituted to study the controversial land deal in Ernakulam-Angamaly archdiocese , has made its recommendations to the Synod of Syro-Malabar Church.
It recommends that the auxillary bishops take more responsibility of the day-to-day activities of the diocese and the authority to do so are delegated by Archbishop Cardinal Alencherry. It suggests that Sebastian Adayanthrath, the Protosyncellus takes the lead in resolving the current crisis.
The Protosyncellus has also been advised to ensure that the Presbytiral Council, Pastoral Council and Presbytirium meet regularly to ensure these bodies are effective in strengthening the clergy groups as well as the clergy-laity relationship in the church.
It adds that the College of Consulters, Finance Council and the Curia meet and evaluate the financial loss and related issues as soon as possible.
The five-member bishops committee also recommends the appointment of an expert committee to study and make recommendations for resolution of the financial crisis, including any compensatory measures to be taken. This expert committee’s report should be submitted to Cardinal Alencherry for his approval, who can approach the Synod for further advice if needed.
The committee comprised Bishops Mathew Moolakkattu, Jacob Manathodath, Thomas Chakyat, George Madathikandathil and Antony Kariyil. The six-day-long synod of Syro-Malabar Church which was held at Church headquarters at Kakkanad concluded on January 13.
