Byndoor: A 31-year-old Malankara Catholic priest died in a road accident on January 15 at Byndoor in Karnataka state.

Father Abraham Kallapat was crossing the road on his motor bike, when a bus hit him. He suffered serious injuries and died on way to hospital.

The priest served as the parish priest of St. George’s Syro Malankara Catholic Church, Mudur, and vice principal of St. Thomas College, Byndoor.

Byndoor, also spelled as Baindur, is some 330 km northwest of Bengaluru, Karnataka state capital.

The incident happened near the new bus stand at Byndoor in Udupi district late night on January 15.

According to reports, Father Kallapat was on his way to provide a bystander for a student of his college, who was admitted in a community health center at Byndoor. The pillion rider, a student, also suffered serious injuries and has been admitted to a private hospital.

A case has been registered in the Byndoor police station.

Father Kallapat’s body would be placed in the college premises on January 16 evening to enable people to pay their last respects. Students of the college have expressed their grief and sense of loss in their vice principal’s death.

Father Kallapat hails from Eralamoola in Wayanad district in Kerala. His funeral will be held at Malankara Catholic Church in Eralamoola under Bathery diocese.
