Patna: A Jesuit college in Patna has organized various events to commemorate the 130th birth anniversary of Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution.
The social awareness committee of St Xavier’s College of Management and Technology on April 14 organised a poster making competition on Ambedkar and his contributions, while the Xavier Debate Club conducted a debate on “Participation of Youth in Politics.”
Both the events were held online, following the Covid-19 protocols.
College Rector Jesuit Father Joy Karayampuram, Dean Academics Mala Kumari Upadhyay, and Alok Baran judged the event.
Meanwhile, 17 volunteers of Youth for Free India (YFI), an active social work movement of college, visited nearby slums to educate the residents about the life and contributions of Ambedkar.
Ambedkar was born on April 14, 1891, as the last of 14 children of Ramji Maloji Sakpal, an army officer, and Bhimabai Sakpal, in Mhow, a town in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
He was jurist, economist, politician and social reformer, who inspired the Dalit Buddhist movement and campaigned against social discrimination towards the untouchables (Dalits). He was British India’s Minister of Labour in Viceroy’s Executive Council, a member of the Constituent Drafting committee, independent India’s first Minister of Law and Justice. He was also the chief architect of the Constitution of India.
In 1990, the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, was posthumously conferred upon Ambedkar. His legacy includes numerous memorials and depictions in popular culture.
