Patna: Students of a Jesuit college in Patna, Bihar, have pledged to protect the environment by conserving nature and all its resources.

They were the volunteers of the National Service Scheme volunteers of St Xavier’s College of Management and Technology. They took the pledge during the observation of the Bihar Earth Day on August 9.

The volunteers released a video clip that showed them taking the pledge to plant saplings, protect plant and animal life from plastic pollution, prevent pollution in water bodies, promote rain water harvesting and conserve electricity, fuel and paper.

Later, a six-member team led by NSS coordinator Ajay Kumar visited a nearby slum and explained to the people living there the significance of Bihar Earth Day.

The slum dwellers were told that a healthy environment was a key foundation for a stable and strong society.

College principal Jesuit Father T Nishaant has congratulated the college NSS unit for the initiative.

Though the World Earth Day is celebrated on April 22, the Bihar government started the concept of Bihar Earth Day on August 9 in 2011 to create awareness about the effect of climate change on planet earth.

On this day, people are asked to plant saplings across the state to make them aware of its benefits on the environment.
