New Delhi, May 18, 2022: As many as five people have found a new lease in life after the parents donated their six year-old daughter’s organs.
Roli Prajapati was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Noida, in western Uttar Pradesh. She was rushed to the hospital, but went into coma. She was referred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. The doctors there declared her brain dead after their desperate attempts to save the little girl failed.
“Roli, a six and a half-year-old girl, arrived at the hospital on April 27. She had a gunshot wound and a bullet was lodged in her brain. The brain was totally damaged. She arrived at the hospital in almost a brain dead condition. So, we talked to the family members,” senior AIIMS neurosurgeon Doctor Deepak Gupta told ANI news agency.
The doctor said they diagnosed her to be having brain death. “Subsequently, our team of doctors sat with the parents and talked about organ donation. We counseled the parents and sought their consent if they would be willing to donate organs to save the lives of other children,” Doctor Gupta explained.
He commended Roli’s parents for donating her liver, kidneys, both corneas and heart valve.
With the organ donation, Roli became the youngest donor in AIIMS Delhi history.
“We were very grateful to the parents for taking this step despite not knowing much about organ donation. They understood the importance of saving lives,” Doctor Gupta added.
He said they had started open donation facility in the prestigious hospital in 1994. “In fact, to the best of my knowledge, in the whole of Delhi and NCR, we haven’t had such a young donor.”
Doctor Gupta is also looking after the organ donation activities at Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Center attached to AIIMS Delhi.
Roli’s father Harnarayan Pratjapati told ANI, “Doctor Gupta and his team counseled us for organ donation that our child could save other lives. We thought about it and decided that she would be alive in other people’s lives and give others reason to smile.”
Poonam Devi, Roli’s mother, emotionally mentioned that her daughter has left them but managed to save the lives of other people.
Meanwhile, Police in Noida have launched an investigation into the case. The source of the gunshot is yet to be established and police are yet to recover the firearm in the case, officials said.
The incident took place on April 28 night at a village under the Phase 3 police station limits.
“The family lives in a village near Pusta. Hari Narayan had laid down for rest after dinner around 9 pm while his daughter Rohini was on a cot near him. Suddenly they heard a sound which was believed to be like a bursting tire but he noticed that his daughter was bleeding from the head,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Noida) Harish Chander told reporters.
During on-site inspection and initial probe by the police, it emerged that the shot was fired from within the house. However, there has been no written complaint in the case by the girl’s family so far, he said.
However, the local police are probing the case on their own to ascertain the facts of the case, DCP Chander added.
