Dibrugarh, Aug 29, 2022: The Dibrugarh diocese in northeastern India August 29 conducted a media training program for its priests and women religious.

“The way we used to communicate has changed and the whole world has migrated to social media communication. If we do not upgrade ourselves, we will not be able to communicate to the present generation,” Bishop Albert Hemrom told the 30 participants at Pastoral Centre, Mancotta, a suburb of Dibrugarh.

The Dibrugarh prelate, who is the chairman of the Media Commission of North East Regional Bishops’ Council (NEIRBC) who spoke at the opening function, highlighted the need for priests and nuns to get updated on the modern means of communication.

Quoting Pope Francis, Bishop Hemrom said, “I hope that this training will enable you to build human communities with your communication based on love, equality and mutual respect.“

The training included topics such as the modern way of communication, social media for evangelization, and hands-on training on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube.

Speaking at the conclusion of training, Father Kuriakose Poovathumkudy, the rector of Oriens Theological College, Shillong, said, “The training did not only highlight the use of social media but also stressed the purpose of these means of communication.”

The participants too expressed satisfaction over the outcome of the training program. Father Joy Pallikunnel, an octogenarian participant, said, “I am going to use Twitter to share my daily reflection from today.”

Sponsored by the North East Social Communication of NEIRBC, the training was conducted by Fathers Tom Mangattuthazhe, the secretary of NESCOM (North East Social Communication), Joseph Manikathan, secretary of Media Commission of Dibrugarh diocese and Felix Anthony, NEIRBC Public Relations Officer.
