New Delhi, Aug 14, 2023: A message from the Catholic bishops in India says celebrating the country’s 77th Independence Day calls for reaffirming people’s commitment to fostering a society built on justice, equality, and inclusivity.

The message, “Reflecting on Independence and Unity,” issued on August 14, the eve of the Independence Day, extends the wishes of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India to all citizens. “May this day be a reminder of our freedom and a celebration of our unity as a nation,” it says.

The bishops remind the citizens that while celebrating the country’s progress over the years, they should not forget that challenges persist.

“India’s journey to freedom was not solely forged on the battlefield, but also through the unwavering determination, sacrifices, and visionary leadership of individuals from diverse backgrounds, including the Christian community. Christian freedom fighters left an indelible mark on India’s history. Their dedication and sacrifices serve as a poignant reminder that the fight for freedom was a collective endeavor that transcended religious and cultural boundaries,” the message says.

The bishops say India’s strength is derived from its ability to confront and resolve internal challenges with empathy, understanding, and unity.

“The diverse fabric of our country is a source of strength, but it also requires ongoing efforts to ensure that every citizen’s rights and aspirations are respected and protected,” the message asserts.

“This Independence Day, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering a society built on justice, equality, and inclusivity. We call upon all stakeholders to engage in meaningful dialogue, seeking solutions that prioritize the well-being and future of all the citizens, especially those who are suffering and feel abandoned due to conflicts, sentiments of hatred, and acts of violence,” says the message issued by the conference’s new public relations officer Father Robinson Rodrigues.

The prelates call upon fellow citizens to “work together to build a stronger, more harmonious nation for generations to come. Let us remember that the true spirit of independence lies not only in celebrating the past but also in shaping the future.”

  1. Jai Hind. Long live Bharat Mata.

  2. First of all, the prelates must learn to practice TRANSPARENCY and ACCOUNTABILITY in all their dealings. Almost every dealing (connected to money and power) of the prelates/clergy remains a “MYSTERY” for the laity. When these basic qualities are absent, they have no right to advocate Justice, Equality and Inclusiveness.

  3. Chhotebhai has hit a straight six over the bowler’s (CBCI) head! There is a yawning gap between CBCI’s precept and its practice.

  4. Justice, equality, inclusiveness – lofty ideals. Charity begins at home, so will the CBCI kindly begin with applying these principles to their interaction with the laity, thank you.
