New Delhi, Nov 11, 2023: The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) on November 11 urged fellow citizens to make the path of understanding, compassion and unity bright on the occasion of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights.

A conference, while extending “warmest wishes to our Hindu brothers and sisters on the auspicious occasion of Deepavali” urged people to illuminate “our homes and hearts with diyas.”

Diya is a tiny earthen lamp used to light up on Diwal that falls on November 12 this year.

The bishops called people to celebrate the festival In the spirit of unity and brotherhood, “embracing the diversity that enriches our shared tapestry.”

The prelates greeted all communities in the country, “transcending barriers and fostering a sense of community that reflects the true essence of India’s unity in diversity.”

Archbishop Andrews Thazhath, the conference president, said, “Deepavali is a time for reflection and joy, a moment to strengthen the bonds that make us one large family of diversity and unity. May the light of this festival shine brightly in every home, fostering love, peace, and goodwill.”

Deepavali (row of lamps) is the term used in southern India for Diwali.

CBCI secretary general said, “As we celebrate Deepavali, the festival of light, let us adopt the values of kindness and understanding. As one nation, together, may we build a bright future filled with hope, tolerance, and harmony.”

The CBCI statement further says, “Deepavali, the festival that symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil, holds a special place in the hearts of millions. Let’s make the path of understanding, compassion and unity bright, as we illuminate our homes and hearts with diyas.

Earlier the Pope’s office in the Vatican for friendship among religions also extended its festive greetings and best wishes to all the Hindus around the world on the occasion of Diwali.

“May God, supreme Light, illumine your hearts and minds, bless your homes and neighbourhoods, and fill your lives with peace and happiness!” said the message.

Inviting all of us to work together for peace the message further said, “As believers and leaders of our respective religions, with common convictions and a sense of shared responsibility for the welfare of humanity, may we, Christians and Hindus, sincerely endeavour to become artisans of peace.”
