: BREADS Bangalore convened a state-level strategic meeting on July 3, 2025 to launch its pioneering “Sport for Change” initiative—an ambitious youth empowerment programme operating across seven locations in five districts of Kerala. Rooted in a dynamic anti-drug campaign, the initiative leverages the unifying and transformative power of sports to steer young people away from substance abuse and anti-social influences, fostering instead a culture of discipline, purpose, and resilience.

BREADS stands for Bangalore Rural Educational and Development Society. It’s the official development wing of the Salesian Province of Bangalore, working primarily in Karnataka and Kerala to uplift marginalized communities—especially children, youth, and women.

The gathering brought together an inspiring constellation of stakeholders committed to youth development through sport. BREADS Executive Director, Fr George P. S., remarked, “Sport is not just a game—it’s a gateway to transformation. When young people are given the right environment, they discover their strength, discipline, and dignity.”

Also present were Fr Josh, Director of the Bangalore Salesian Province Sports Commission, and Fr John, Director of Youth Services in Kerala. Fr Josh noted, “This initiative is a testament to our belief that sport can be a powerful tool for social change. It builds community, character, and courage.”

Fr John added, “Kerala’s youth are full of potential. Through this programme, we’re not just keeping them away from harmful influences—we’re inviting them into a future of hope and leadership.”

The event also featured voices from the field. Anjali, a 17-year-old footballer from Malappuram, shared, “Before joining the centre, I felt invisible. Now, I feel like I belong—and I dream of becoming a coach one day.”

Riyas, a community coordinator from Thrissur, reflected, “We’ve seen boys who once loitered on the streets now showing up early for practice. That’s the power of purpose.”

With its holistic vision, Sport for Change aims not only to combat the pressing issue of drug abuse among Kerala’s youth, but also to create safe, inclusive spaces where young people can thrive, dream, and lead.

  1. Sports and Games – life in full flow. The apostles and disciples of Jesus kept themselves fit through a variety of fitness drills which were often related to their professions. Several of them could run, dive, jump, swim, row, throw, and lift heavy nets filled with sea food. Others with fearless minds and confidence in their wrists and ankles climbed tall tress to get a good view of Jesus their coach and Master.
