Mangaluru, Aug 29, 2025: The Church in India on August 29 mourned the death of Father Vincent Francis Monteiro, former national director of Christian student movements.
Father Monteiro died at 9 am on August 29 at St Juze Vaz Home, Jeppu, in Mangalore, where he was spending his retired lie. He was 71.
His funeral Mass and burial rites are scheduled at 4 pm on August 31 in St Vincent Ferrer Church, Valencia.
“Over 44 years of priestly life, he distinguished himself in the diocese of Mangalore and in the Church beyond, through his leadership, simplicity, and commitment to pastoral care,” says a condolence message from the diocese of Mangalore.
Father Monteiro served as the national director of the Young Christian Students/Young Students Movement (YCS/YSM) of India from 1989 to 1995. During this period, he travelled extensively across the country, empowering thousands of young students to live their faith courageously and responsibly.
“His vision gave new dynamism to the movement, nurturing leadership and Christian values among youth across India,” the message added.
In 2004, he was appointed the Asian Chaplain of YCS that helped him offer spiritual guidance to the movement at a continental level. His leadership was widely recognized for building bridges among cultures and inspiring students to become agents of change rooted in the Gospel.
Father Monteiro leaves behind a legacy of faith, hope, and service, particularly through the YCS/YSM movement that continues to impact generations of students in India and Asia, the diocesan message said.
Alongside his youth ministry, Father Monteiro served the diocese of Mangalore as assistant parish priest, parish priest of Pangla, Kinnigoly, and Bendur, and director of the Pastoral Institute, Mangalore.
“His ministry was marked by deep pastoral concern, a spirit of simplicity, and his enduring love for the people of God,” the diocese recalled.
Born on July 24, 1954, at Angelore, Mangalore, to Raymond and Christine Monteiro, Father Vincent was ordained a priest on April 22, 1981.
Father Monteiro began his ministry as assistant parish priest at Kirem and later as assistant director of St Antony’s Charity Home.
Wherever he served, he was remembered as a visionary leader who guided both youth and clergy, and as a pastor who nurtured vocations while bringing new energy to pastoral and youth apostolate.
