Pune, Sept 21, 2025: The Indian Catholic Press Association (ICPA), one of the oldest Catholic media organizations in the country, on September 21 elected Capuchin Father Suresh Mathew, former editor of Indian Currents, as its president.

The election took place during the association’s annual general body meeting held at Inigo Sadan in Jnana Deepa (Papal Seminary), Pune, western India.

Father Mathew replaced Ignatius Gonsalves, a veteran journalist and the second layperson to head the association in its six-decades-old history.

The association also elected unopposed Holy Spirit Sister Tessy Jacob, until now the vice president, as the secretary. The new vice president is Society of St Paul Father Joe Eruppakkatt, who was until now the treasurer.

Father Sajith Cyriac, another member of the Society of Jesus with several books to his credit, is the new treasurer. Incumbent joint-secretary and senior journalist Renjith Leen was re-elected unopposed.

The new executive committee members are Capuchin Father Gaurav Nair, editor of Indian Currents, who represents the association’s northern region while Father S Rajasekaran, editor-in-chief of Tamil Catholic magazine ‘Nam Vaazhvu, represents the south.

Also re-elected was Rajesh Christian, who represented the western region. Father Antony Pancras, editor of “The New Leader” magazine in Chennai, was named the institutional member.

The association unites Catholic media professionals from across the country and provides a platform for networking, media training, and discussions on ethical journalism.

  1. So all the control of ICPA goes back to the Clergy! I am sure we have many very credible lay members to be at the helm of ICPA!! When will the Laity wake up from its slumber?
