Old Goa, June 21, 2026: A new illustrated volume, Basilica of Bom Jesus, edited by Jesuit Father Patricio Fernandes and Vishvesh Prabhakar Kandolkar, was released May 31 at the Basilica of Bom Jesus, Old Goa.
The publication was launched as a tribute to Father Fernandes, who concluded sixteen years of service at the Basilica, including his tenure as Rector since 2017.
The book commemorates his contribution as Keeper of the Shrine and documents the rich history, heritage, and continuing significance of one of Goa’s most important religious and cultural landmarks.
Designed as an illustrated volume, Basilica of Bom Jesus brings together scholarly essays, archival material, and curated images that offer readers a comprehensive understanding of the Basilica’s past, present, and future.
The volume builds upon ongoing research, including Kandolkar’s academic study, Goa’s Bom Jesus as Visual Culture (Routledge, 2025).
Among its highlights is a personal essay by Father Fernandes reflecting on his journey at the Basilica and the conservation and restoration initiatives undertaken during his tenure.
The publication carries a message from Archbishop Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão and a foreword by Jesuit Father Arturo Sosa, Superior General of the Society of Jesus.
The volume also acknowledges the contribution of Pantaleão Fernandes, whose artistic photography and production support were instrumental.
Speaking at the release, Kandolkar said he hoped the book will “serve as an enduring record of the Basilica of Bom Jesus and inspire greater appreciation of its spiritual, historical, and architectural legacy.”
