Malaparamba, June 21, 2026: Jesuit Father Abraham Pallivathukal, SJ, one of the pioneers and earliest spiritual guides of the Jesus Youth movement, died early Saturday at Christ Hall, Malaparamba, in Kerala’s Kozhikode district. He was 86.

Affectionately known as “Palliyachan” (beloved priest-father), Father Pallivathukal played a vital role in the early growth of Jesus Youth, shaping generations of young Catholics through prayer, spiritual accompaniment, and personal care.

He also strengthened the movement’s Full Timers initiative, encouraging young people to dedicate periods of their lives to missionary service and evangelization. Over decades, he became a mentor and spiritual father to countless youth in India and abroad.

Tributes from around the world

Following his death, tributes poured in from laypeople, priests, religious, and Jesus Youth members worldwide. Many remembered him as a priest who knew people personally and accompanied them in their faith journey.

Dr. Beena Manoj, a retired associate professor and senior Jesus Youth member, said Fr. Abraham had been like a father to her since 1985. “He taught me to love Jesus and live a life of gratitude,” she said.

When her father died in 1995, Father Pallivathukal comforted her: “As long as I am alive, you should never think that you have no father.” She added, “He kept his promise. Everybody thought they were Achan’s favorite.”

She recalled his daily calls when her husband was unwell. “He was as close to everyone as Jesus,” she said.

Remembered as a true Disciple

Swami Sachidananda paid tribute, calling him “a true disciple of Christ” and “the backbone of the Charismatic Movement.” He added, “I had enjoyed his friendship for many years. May his soul find eternal rest in the Lord.”

Father M.K. George, former provincial of the Jesuit Kerala Province, recalled a recent exchange. “A few weeks back, some friends worried he was seriously ill. I sent him a video message, and his reply was: ‘I am keeping well and happy.’

He did look tired, but his love for life and passion to share joy remained forever. Father Pallivathukal will remain for me a supreme example of someone whom God touched.”

Pastor with extraordinary memory

Midhun Paul Elavunikkum Thottiyil, international coordinator of Jesus Youth, said he met Fr. Abraham every three months for blessings.

“He knew everybody’s name, their children, and remembered the details of all our lives. He was such a great pastor who led us. It is a great loss,” Midhun said.

Jesuit Father Henry Pattarumadathil, recalled Father Pallivathukal’s many responsibilities: director of Snehasena, a popular children’s magazine; spiritual father; retreat preacher; Jesus Youth animator; Jesuit superior; rector; administrator; and parish vicar. Since 2022, he had lived a life of prayer and rest at Christ Hall.

Legacy of faith, service

Father Pallivathukal was among the pioneers who accompanied the early growth of Jesus Youth in Kerala, which later became an international Catholic movement present in more than 40 countries.

Members have shared memories of retreats, conversations, and guidance that shaped their faith journeys. Father Pattarumadathil noted that Emmaus, the headquarters of the Kerala Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services at Kalamassery, was Father Pallivathukal’s dream project.
