Jakarta, July 26, 2026: Pope Leo XIV called on Catholic leaders across Asia to deepen Eucharistic spirituality in their local churches, describing it as the foundation of ecclesial unity and an essential path toward becoming “bridge builders” throughout the region.
The pope’s message was delivered in a video address during the 12th Plenary Assembly of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC) in Jakarta, where bishops, clergy, religious and lay delegates gathered to discuss the future mission of the Catholic Church in Asia.
Opening his remarks, Pope Leo greeted participants and expressed his support for the assembly’s work.
“Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I send cordial greetings to all of you participating in the plenary assembly of the Federation of Asian Bishops Conferences in Jakarta,” he said.
The pontiff linked his message to his encyclical “Magnifica Humanitas”, emphasizing that Christian solidarity is rooted in Christ and strengthened through sacramental life.
“I wrote that Christian solidarity finds its source in the mystery of Christ and emerges from our communion in the sacraments, particularly the Eucharist,” the pope said.
He then appealed directly to church leaders across the continent.
“For this reason, I would like to encourage you to continue to promote a Eucharistic spirituality within your local churches,” he said.
Pope Leo described such spirituality as essential for deepening unity among believers and strengthening ties between local churches.
“It is a spirituality of ecclesial unity grounded in the charity that flows from the gift of our Lord in the Eucharist,” he said.
The pope expressed hope that stronger bonds of communion would become a visible sign of God’s presence throughout Asia and contribute to the Church’s witness in diverse societies.
“It is my hope that the bonds of communion within and between the local churches will be strengthened and become an ever greater sign of God’s presence in your various countries, which in turn will help you be bridge builders together throughout Asia,” he said.
Referring to the assembly’s theme, drawn from Jesus’ words to Nathanael, Pope Leo said Christ remains the source of unity among believers.
“As his disciples today, we know that Jesus is not only the source of our communion with God, but also with one another,” he said.
The pope concluded by entrusting the gathering to the Blessed Virgin Mary and invoking wisdom and strength for participants as they continue their deliberations.
