New Delhi, August 15, 2026: As India marked its Independence Day, Cardinal Anthony Poola, president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, called on citizens to honor the sacrifices of the nation’s founders by safeguarding freedom, justice and equality.
“India is a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic,” Cardinal Poola said in a message released on the eve of the August 15 Independence Day. “Our freedom must translate into humanity, justice, equality and the upliftment of the poor, the marginalized and the downtrodden.”
He voiced concern over violence against Christians, citing incidents of intimidation and mob lynching. “Every citizen has the right to live, worship and serve without fear,” he said, urging authorities to protect constitutional freedoms.
Cardinal Poola also appealed for repeal of the proposed Foreign Contribution Regulation Amendment Bill, warning it could hinder charitable institutions that provide education, healthcare and humanitarian aid.
“On this Independence Day, let us renew our commitment to India where freedom is respected and diversity celebrated,” Cardinal Poola said.
