VATICAN CITY, August 6, 2026: Pope Leo XIV has appointed Sister Maria Nirmalini, Superior General of the Sisters of the Apostolic Carmel, as a Consultor of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.
The appointment, formally communicated in a Vatican decree dated June 18, entrusts her with a five‑year term of service to the universal Church.
The Dicastery oversees matters relating to religious institutes, consecrated life, and societies of apostolic life, guiding communities in their governance, mission, and spiritual witness.
As a Consultor, Sister Nirmalini will contribute her expertise to the Dicastery’s deliberations, offering counsel on issues affecting consecrated life worldwide.
Her appointment highlights the growing role of women religious in Vatican consultative bodies and underscores the importance of perspectives from Asia.
Sister Nirmalini’s leadership experience in India brings valuable insight into the challenges and opportunities facing religious congregations in diverse cultural and pastoral contexts.
The Holy See press office announced a broader list of new Consultors — distinguished scholars and religious leaders from Europe, Africa, and Latin America.
Among the Asian appointees are Sister Maria Nirmalini of India and from Africa is Rev. Kevin Otieno Mwandha of Kenya, whose inclusion reflects the Vatican’s commitment to international representation.
By naming Sister Nirmalini, Pope Leo XIV affirms the contribution of Indian religious leaders to the global Church. Her five‑year mandate comes at a time when congregations worldwide are adapting to changing pastoral realities, new forms of mission, and evolving needs of consecrated life.
