NEW DELHI, October 13, 2026: The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) has condemned the disruption of a Christian gathering in West Bengal and demanded strict action against those responsible for violence at a Bible convention in Nadia district.

According to the CBCI, the Annual Santali Mega Bible Convention Retreat, held Oct. 8-11 at the Divine Love Retreat Centre in Jalalkhali under the Diocese of Krishnagar, was a peaceful spiritual gathering conducted with all required permissions, including a request for police protection.

The bishops’ conference said the violence erupted on the evening of Oct. 9 when a large crowd assembled near St. Louis Parish Church after allegations of “forced conversion” were broadcast over loudspeakers. The CBCI alleged the claims were false and intended to incite hostility against Christians.

The group allegedly vandalized church property, shouted anti-Church slogans and assaulted people guarding the premises, causing panic among priests, religious and retreat participants.

Calling the attack a violation of the constitutional right to freedom of religion, the CBCI urged the West Bengal government to take immediate legal action and ensure protection for Christians and their institutions. It also appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to intervene and safeguard minority communities.
