NEW DELHI, October 27, 2026: Dominic F. Dixon, executive director of the United Nations Association for Development and Peace, received the International Human Rights Award at the International Convention for Human Rights 2026 in New Delhi.

The award was presented by the World Human Rights Research Council on Oct. 25 at the NDMC Convention Centre on Sansad Marg.

Accepting the prestigious accolade, Dixon dedicated the award to the memory of Father Stan Swamy, the 84-year-old Jesuit priest and human rights defender who spent his life standing alongside Adivasi communities and the marginalized.

Father Swamy was arrested by India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) in October 2020 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with the Bhima Koregaon case.

Despite suffering from advanced Parkinson’s disease and serious health problems, he was detained at Taloja Central Jail.

His request for a drink straw and sipper cup—essential because his condition made it difficult to hold a glass—became a powerful symbol of struggle and dignity under trial before courts initially rejected the items despite public concern.

After months in custody and failing health compounded by COVID-19, he passed away on July 5, 2021, while his bail plea was pending.

Reflecting on the recognition, Dr. Dixon said, “This is more than an honour, which I feel that I do not deserve. It is a reminder of the urgent measure of courage to speak for vulnerable ones whose voices often go unheard.”
