Kolkata, August 4, 2026: A sudden outbreak of violence in Minakha village of West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district has sparked allegations that workers of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) were attacked during a local confrontation.
The incident has quickly spiralled into a political blame game, with rival parties trading accusations and raising concerns about communal polarization in Bengal’s already tense atmosphere.
According to local accounts, a group of VHP activists engaged in “gharvapsi” (“return home”) mobilization efforts were allegedly set upon by rivals, leading to injuries and chaos in the marketplace.
The pro-Hindu VHP leaders claimed their workers were deliberately targeted to intimidate the Hindu nationalist organization.
Opposition parties, however, countered that governing Bharatiya Janata Party‑linked groups provoked the clash, accusing them of orchestrating unrest to consolidate support ahead of civic polls.
Police forces were deployed to contain the situation, but opposition leaders charged them with inaction and bias, alleging that law enforcement failed to protect vulnerable groups.
Complaints have been lodged, and preliminary arrests are reportedly underway.
The Minakha incident comes against the backdrop of a series of street‑level attacks across Bengal.
Communist leader Minakshi Mukherjee was recently assaulted in Sitalkuchi, where eggs were hurled at her rally. All India Trinamool Congress leaders have also faced hostility in Sandeshkhali and Nazat, underscoring a pattern of escalating confrontations.
Observers warn that the Minakha commotion carries communal undertones, with allegations of attacks on VHP workers adding a religious dimension to what is otherwise a fierce turf war between ruling and opposition forces.
Analysts note that both sides are framing the narrative to their advantage: the BJP and VHP portraying victimhood, while opposition parties allege provocation and intimidation.
The episode highlights Bengal’s fragile law‑and‑order situation, where political rivalries, communal anxieties, and police neutrality are all under scrutiny.
With civic polls approaching, the incident is expected to be amplified by both camps to mobilize supporters, raising fears of further polarization in North 24 Parganas.
