Steyl, August 4, 2026: Twenty-three young Divine Word Missionaries from ten European provinces and regions gathered at the Society’s Motherhouse in Steyl from July 20 to 25, 2026, to deepen their missionary identity and strengthen intercultural fraternity.
The week began with introductions and a pilgrimage to Goch, birthplace of St. Arnold Janssen, and the Marian Shrine of Kevelaer.
Walking in the founder’s footsteps, participants rediscovered the missionary vision that continues to inspire the Congregation.
Formation sessions included reflections on Janssen’s spirituality led by Father Dennis Manzana, and discussions on intercultural living facilitated by Father Xavier Alangaram,
Missionaries shared pastoral experiences and concerns, with cultural evenings and daily Eucharist enriching fraternity.
Father Peter Kummor, reflected: “The meeting was very insightful and educational. It gave us the opportunity to share our joys and challenges as brothers working in the Europe Zone. We also had the chance to deepen our awareness of interculturality and our spirituality in line with our mission in Europe.”
Representing nations from Austria to Madagascar, the group highlighted Europe’s growing challenges with migration. One participant was unable to attend due to visa restrictions despite serving as a priest in London. Migration and interculturality emerged as central themes of the week.
The gathering concluded with evaluation and Eucharist in Steyl’s Upper Church.
Missionaries departed with renewed friendships, stronger fraternity, and a deeper appreciation of the charism that has united the Society for nearly 150 years — a reminder that every missionary journey draws strength from the founding vision of St. Arnold Janssen: to proclaim the Word of God with faith, courage, and joy.
