Ahmedabad, Dec. 17, 2025: The Gujarat government’s decision to take over the administration of the Seventh-day Adventist Higher Secondary School in Maninagar, Ahmedabad, has triggered sharp debate, with the school management moving the High Court against the order.
The takeover, announced on December 16, follows a fatal incident four months earlier when a tenth grader allegedly stabbed an eighth grader on campus. An inquiry by the education directorate later flagged “serious violations of education laws, safety norms and affiliation rules.”
The government resolution stated: “Keeping the interests of students in mind, it has been decided that the District Education Officer (DEO) will act as administrator.” The order covers all sections of the institution, and bars new admissions until further notice.
School authorities, however, have challenged the move. In a petition before the Gujarat High Court, they argued that the takeover was “an extreme step that undermines the institution’s minority-run status and its right to manage its own affairs.” The matter is expected to come up for hearing soon.
Parents expressed mixed reactions. Some welcomed the government’s intervention, citing safety concerns. “After what happened, we want accountability. The government stepping in gives us some assurance,” said a parent of a ninth grader. Others worried about disruption: “This school has served our children for years. A sudden takeover creates uncertainty,” remarked another parent.
Education experts noted that this could be the first instance of a government takeover of a school partially affiliated with a different board. “It sets a precedent in how the state responds to governance failures in private institutions,” said an academic observer.
With nearly 10,000 students enrolled, the case has drawn wide attention. The High Court’s decision will determine whether the government’s intervention stands or if management rights are restored to the school.

It is a blatant violation of the constitutional provisions. What is the guarantee that government takeover will lead to zero incidents? Having said that, Christian institutes need to tighten their systems, particularly on safety and security. Taking things for granted, faith alone will do the rest is not quite the way.
